The Asian Elephant

The Asian elephant is the largest land animal inhabiting the Asian continent. Its young are nourished with milk and therefore they are classified as mammals. The adults of the species are herbivorous. The average life span of and elephant is approximately 60 years with the oldest on record being 80 years. They are extremely intelligent and social animals by nature. The Asian elephant once roamed from Mesopotamia to East Asia, although presently they are native to only 13 countries in Asia. Due to the rapid reduction in their distribution and population size, elephants are listed as endangered species.
